It’s a ‘Burgh thing

It always bugs me when someone spells Pittsburgh (as in PA) without the “h” at the end, but I never knew there was a long, amusing story on how Pittsburgh got its h, lost its h and recovered its h. Amazing …

we have a very similar situation with our county seat of (new) bloomfield. it has historically been known as “bloomfield”. all of the locals call it “bloomfield”. the signs at the edge of town welcome you to “bloomfield”. even the county courthouse says “bloomfield”.

but the federal government decided that there was already a “bloomfield” (near pgh) and so this one needed to be renamed “new bloomfield”.

they haven’t received much cooperation. i believe the only physical location touting the moniker is the tiny brick post office (and a few road signs).

if you ask someone if they are from “new bloomfield”, you have immediately identified yourself as an outsider and will probably get a response akin to, “no, i live in town… not at the post office.”
