This one is pretty bizarre. I didn’t realize soccer could get so kinky. It’s a game that I never really understood, until the 1994 World Cup. I was still in Albuquerque and watched several of the matches with a soccer fanatic I knew. It helped to have him explain basic strategy. When I started looking at it as a slower, more thoughtful version of hockey, I finally got it. I still don’t go out of my way to watch it, but the highlight reels are pretty cool. i’ve got a british friend (local guy) who has actually locked himself away for a month… doesn’t answer the phone, check email, etc. he’s taping each game and watching them the next day (with his two sons) and doesn’t want anyone to spoil it for him. he has completely shut himself off from society in order to watch the games without knowing the outcome in advance! fortunately, with elimination, they’re down to two games per day now. i don’t get it but if i could afford to kick back and watch tv for a month, i might consider it…
