Where I'm wandering ...

Cruel Site of the Day: The name says it all. I try to hit Cruel Site at least once a week. Always at least one gem in there that you just can't resist pinging to your more demented friends.

Justin's Links: I first started reading Justin Hall's site in '96 or so, when he visited Austin and the then-incredibly-cool Austin360 did a piece on him. In short, Justin was advocating Internet for the masses. He was (and still is) tight with Howard Rheingold (I'm a big fan of Rheingold, too). I drifted from reading Justin's site and didn't return until a few months ago. He's matured a lot since then, but he still has a sharp eye and is fun to follow. He's just returning to the U.S. after living in Japan. The updates from Japan were great reading.

Tivo forums : Great place for info and smack talk related to Tivo. I love my Tivo, though sometimes it's more of a love/hate thing. These forums are where I turn to get my Tivo fix. After an East Tennessee lightning storm fried my Tivo's modem, I turned to the Tivo forums for advice. They pointed me to a forum member named ElectricLegs, who could not only fix my dead modem but also add a bigger, badder hard drive. The Tivo forum is part of AvsForum, which focuses on audio visual gadgets. It's also worth checking out.

Randomly Ever After: This is a blog (Web log) that is kept by The Gus, a dot.com refugee who's living in L.A. and trying to figure out if he'll still be employed during his next entry. Overall, The Gus is a good writer and tosses out some pretty funny observations. He annoys the hell out of me at times, too, which is equally good. His satirical sites do a great job of getting people really pissed off. Definitely check out his Trenchcoat Mafia page, written from the "perspective" of one of the Columbine killers. Jonathan Swift would be proud. I backed into his stuff when I stumbled across his Big Fun glossary. It reminded me a lot of my totally adrift college daze in Edinboro University (an academic slum south of Erie, Pa.) This is almost like a soap opera to me. I check it every day ...

The Igloo Report : I've been reading this site for a long time. It's how I keep up with the antics of the Pittsburgh Penguins. I also read the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's sports pages, but Gary Patalsky (I think that's his name) offers a much better critical analysis of the games. He's not a great writer, and sometimes he doesn't update promptly, but he has plenty of attitude and is worth reading.

Homepage of the Dead: No, not the Grateful. The Living. As in the Living Dead. This George Romero tribute site is worth checking out if you like Romero's films, which I do. Love the Dead trilogy, and also am a big fan of Martin, his modern-day vampire film that was shot in North Braddock. Although Night of the Living Dead is my favorite in the trilogy, I love watching Dawn of the Dead. It was shot in a shopping mall in Pittsburgh that's near where I grew up. The satire in the film kills me ...

Fucked Company: Like watching a car wreck. Over. And Over. And Over. This site revels in the demise of ill-conceived, poorly run, dumb ass dot.coms. It features rumors on who's the next company heading for Chapter 11. Really love the way the name is a poke at Fast Company, a magazine that's as arrogant as the companies it covers ...

The Onion: I don't know how these guys stay so consistently funny, but they do. Their humor is right on. Great satire. This is one of the best things on the Internet.
